Black Sea Underwater Research Center

Crimean Republican institution "Black Sea Underwater Research Center" was created in accordance with the decree of the Council of Ministers of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea on October 9, 2012 № 739- p, pursuant to Article 12 of the Law of Ukraine "On Protection of the Archaeological Heritage". First, at the highest state level, the problems of underwater research in the country were solved and decided to create a specialized state research institution. This was the first practical step in the state , aimed at the development of the industry in the entire history of underwater archaeology of the Black Sea, which begins with the XIX century. Regulation of the Council of Ministers of Crimea had fulfilled the requirements of Articles 7, 10, 12 and 22 of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage (ratified by Ukraine in 2006) on the establishment of a state institution in the country who will assume the entire complex underwater archaeological activities. The newly established center is currently the lead agency which is entrusted museumification of underwater artefacts, preservation of underwater cultural heritage and prevention of offenses in this sphere.

The Centre aims to conduct basic and applied research to provide scientific knowledge in the sphere of exploring the underwater cultural heritage, record keeping and monitoring of underwater archaeological research, implementing rescue underwater archaeological sites or monuments crumbling monuments threatened destruction, the implementation of scientific and technical expertise, the systematic examination of the shelf and the basin of the Black Sea in the exclusive maritime economic zone and the territorial sea of Ukraine, identification and certification of underwater cultural heritage sites for inclusion in the national Register of immovable monuments of Ukraine by Category monuments of local and national significance.
